1. 몸에 병이 없기를 바라지 말라.
몸에 병이 없으면 탐욕이 생기기 쉽나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"병고로써 양약을 삼으라" 하셨느니라.
1. Don't wish for perfect health.
In perfect health there is greed and wanting.
So an ancient said,
"Make good medicine from the suffering of sickness."
2. 세상살이에 곤란없기를 바라지 말라.
세상살이에 곤란이 없으면 업신여기는 마음과 사치한 마음이 생기게 되나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"근심과 곤란으로써 세상을 살아가라"하셨느니라.
2. Don't hope for a life without problems.
An easy life results in a judgemental and lazy mind.
So an ancient once said,
"Accept the anxieties and difficults of this life."
3. 공부하는데 마음에 장애없기를 바라지 말라.
마음에 장애가 없으면 배우는 것이 넘치게 되나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"장애 속에서 해탈을 얻으라" 하셨느니라.
3. Don't expect your practice to be always clear of obstacles.
Without hindrances the mind that seeks enlightenment may be burnt out.
So an ancient once said,
"Attain deliverance in disturbances."
4. 수행하는데 마(魔)없기를 바라지 말라.
수행하는데 마가 없으면 서원이 굳건해지지 못하게 되나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"모든 마군으로부터 수행을 도와주는 벗을 삼으라." 하셨느니라.
4. Don't expect to practice hard and not experince the weird.
Hard practice that evades the unknown makes for a weak commitment.
So an ancient once said,
"Help hard practice by befriending every demon."
5. 일을 계획하되 쉽게 되기를 바라지 말라.
일이 쉽게 풀리면 뜻이 경솔해지기 쉽나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"많은 세월을 두고 일을 성취하라" 하셨느니라.
5. Don't expect to finish doing something easily.
If you happen to acquire something easily the will is made weaker.
So an ancient once said,
"Try again and again to complete what you are doing."
6. 친구를 사귀되 내가 이롭기를 바라지 말라.
내가 이롭고자 하면 의리를 상하게 되나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"순결로써 사귐을 길게하라" 하셨느니라.
6. Make friends but don't expect any benefit for yourself.
Friendship only for oneself harms trust.
So an ancient once said,
"Have an enduring friendship with purity in heart."
7. 남이 내 뜻대로 순종해 주기를 바라지 말라.
남이 내 뜻대로 순종해주면 마음이 교만해지게 쉽나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"내 뜻에 맞지 않는 사람들로 무리를 삼으라" 하셨느니라.
7. Don't expect others to follow your direction.
When it happens that others go along with you, it results in pride.
So an ancient once said,
"Use your will to bring peace between people."
8. 공덕을 베풀때에는 과보를 바라지 말라.
과보를 바라면 불순한 생각이 움트게 되나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"덕 베푼 것을 헌신처럼 버리라." 하셨느니라.
8. Expect no reward for an act of charity.
Expecting something in return leads to a scheming mind.
So an ancient once said,
"Throw false spirituality away like a pair of old shoes."
9. 이익을 분에 넘치게 바라지 말라.
이익이 분에 넘치면 어리석은 마음이 생기기 쉽나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"적은 이익으로써 부자가 되라." 하셨느니라.
9. Don't seek profit over and above what your work is worth.
Acquiring false profit makes a fool (of oneself).
So an ancient once said,
"Be rich in hanesty."
10. 억울함을 당하더라도 굳이 변명하려고 하지 말라.
억울함을 변명하다보면 원망하는 마음을 일으키게 되나니,
그래서 성인이 말씀하기를,
"억울함을 당하는 것으로 수행하는 문을 삼으라." 하셨느니라.
10. Don't try to make clarity of mind with severe practice.
Every mind comes to hate severity, and where is clarity in mortification?
So an ancient once said,
"Clear a passageway through severe practice."
이와같이 막히는 데서 도리어 트이는 것이요,
트임을 구하는 것이 도리어 막히는 결과를 낳는다.
부처님께서는 많은 장애 가운데서 바른 깨달음을 이루셨도다.
요즘 세상에 도를 배우는 사람들이 먼저 역경을 견디어내지 못한다면,
어떤 장애가 부딪칠 때 그것을 이겨낼 수 없다.
그래서 마침내 법왕의 큰 보배까지도 잃게 될 것이니 어찌 슬픈일이 아니겠는가.
마음에 깊이 새겨 생활의 지혜로 삼아야 할 것이다.
